70 Meetup Groups match “backpacking” near Monterey, CA
For years I was a solo backpacker who frequently ventured solo into less frequented areas. Recently I experienced a scare while doing so which made me realize how vulnerable a solo hiker off trail is. I concluded that for safety and companionship where any portion of the route is off established trails, I would prefer to hike with other independent-style backpackers. Those meetups of our group where I am part of the group will provide the partners I seek. My idea of a small group is myself, my d …

In our first year, we’ve grown to over 300 members and we’ve gone out on more than 15 backpac …

This is a group for anyone interested in hiking, backpacking, camping, etc. in the Livermore area.
This group is intended to be an open network of mostly experienced backpackers, of the boomer age (you can use your own definition, but 45 to 60 plus or minus is my concept). Generally trips should be moderately paced, 6 to 8 miles a day, up to 1500 feet of gain. Everyone in the group is welcome to organize a trip, and the settings for the group allow anyone to do that. So, if you have a trailhead reservation and want some companions, feel free to post a trip. A few suggested groundrules. Fir …

Many times it's our first time on the trail too. Occasionally we will join a guided hikes through other organizations but the description will indicate that it is led by that particular group. Yosemite Campsite Share Getting camp sites in Yosemite is hard. So hard. So hard that you have to book 6 months in advance. And you have to do it right at 7:00am on the dot. At 7:01 sites are gone. And guess what, that sucks to do on a Sunday morning....... with a hangover. Yeah, that was my last Sunday. But Yosemite it where the good climbing is and dammit I'm going (and you can come to). So this group is about helping more people camp in Yosemite. How? Well sites allow up to 6 people, and yo …

Places like Villa Montalvo's trail, or Sanborn County Park (about 5 minutes from downtown Saratoga), or the Skyline Saratoga Gap trails? These are easy to get to, fun, and full of the beautiful nature we love! Are you wanting to meet other women to chat with, and perhaps make some new friends? I'm also thinking of eventually incorporating a short before-hike sharing time, where …
Let's hike all of the great parks and open space preserves in the bay area. I love to hike in the early mornings when it's cool and maybe even foggy. Though many of the walks are between 16-22 miles, they're set at a reasonable pace and are easy to train for. Why'd You Start the Group? Long story short: In March 2011 I walked 330 miles of the Camino de Santiago, a 1,200 year-old pilgrimage route in Spain. I lived with very little for 3 weeks. I experienced nature, art, and history. I met people from all around the world on the same simple quest - to r …

In December 2011, I was sitting in a three-day, 13-hours-a-day Landmark Education self-improvement seminar in San Francisco, and all I could think about was escaping through one of the hermetically sealed windows and making a dash for Nob Hill, the only thing resembling a steep incline in the area. It was during the dinner break during the final day of the seminar that I conspired with Paul Schutzman and Mai-Ling Garcia -- two of the very cool people with whom I'd made a connection during our th …
