This will be a 3 Day trip to Red River Gorge in Kentucy. We will drive down Thursday night and stay at a local campground before hitting the trail on Friday morning. We will be spending Friday and Saturday on the trail and camping in the back country. Sunday we will hike a few miles back to the cars and start the long drive home.
The Red River Gorge is a unique and scenic natural area within the Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky. Known for its abundant natural stone arches, unusual rock formations, and spectacular sandstone cliffs, the Red River Gorge has been designated a geological area by the US Forest Service. This rugged landscape creates a variety of environmental conditions that provide diverse habitats for many species of plants and animals. Along the ridgetops are lichen-covered sandstone outcroppings and thin, dry soils with sparse oak-pine forests. In the cool, moist coves of the narrow valleys grow rich, mixed forests containing a great variety of tree species, including tulip poplar, sweet birch, yellow buckeye, and bigleaf magnolia.
Costs include Thursday night campground fees(No estimate yet), 3-Day parking permit($5), travel expenses(determined by car pool) and $2 Event Fee.
This trips is for Intermediate backpackers who have previous experience and who are in good physical shape. The trails in some areas are exceptionally rough, steep and muddy. Trekking poles are recommended. You can find more information about Red River Gorge here: http://en.wikipedia.o...
