How to find us
"EVERYONE who is going to attend MUST RSVP "Yes" by noon on Thursday the 15th. At that time I will send you directions to the venue. We will be at Janet & Danny's in New Richmod. I get the impression that once you're in NR you're < 10 minutes out."

Who attended?
Estimated attendance:  2  people attended.

NOTICE. THIS IS BEING POSTPONED INDEFINITELY. WE'RE KEEPING THE DETAILS BELOW BECAUSE THE PLAN - AT THIS POINT - IS TO RESCHEDULE, BUT WE DO NOT HAVE A DATE AT THIS TIME.

SINCE NO NEW PEOPLE RSVP'S "YES" DIRECTIONS WERE NOT SENT OUT. THE SEVERAL WHO WERE COMING BUT ARE NOT "NEW" AND WHO KNEW DIRECTIONS HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED BY PHONE OF THE CHANGE.

SEE YOU NEXT TIME. (MONTHLY MEETUP MEETING AT THE BACK PORCH ON MONDAY NIGHT - THE 19TH)

This training event will be at Danny & Janet's home. (They do NOT live at 100 Main Street. I put that up there simply so you could see where New Richmond is.)

Here's part of an e-mail from Janet about the venue.

"We'd love to host a "no risk" training event on the 16th. I think one advantage of a backyard to a remote location would be that if a newbie absolutely cannot get the gear together he/she could still attend, learn, and use the bailout option (our lower level).

I think this also could be a "growing" survival exercise for seasoned backpackers. "Don't bring gear and see what you can put together for a shelter."

The insect count is still low and the temperatures mild (plus that bailout option!) so there's little physical risk.

Also Walk New Richmond (start at 5:30PM) may be able to go "off pavement" if the wetlands are dried out. We'll check it out.

Another idea-how about a dessert potluck around the campfire after dinner??"

So the beginners are welcome to come and bring whatever they have. Even if it's only a sleeping bag or blanket, they'll be OK. If you need to borrow some gear, contact me. The idea is to pretend you are backpacking and to simulate that in controlled conditions so you can learn what you don't know. Also, check out the suggestions on our New Member Orientation Document regarding what to bring to this or any backpacking event.

And for the experts, I understand the back yard extends a ways and is backed up by forest. So you can do your "naked-into-the-wilderness" improvised shelters or whatever. (but with at least a loin-cloth) shock

Bring a desert to share around the campfire after supper and plan to relax and laugh a lot.

There is a suggested beginning of "quite hours" at 10:00 pm.

IMPORTANT! See the section above titled "How will members find you at the venue?"

By Friday noon there were no RSVP's "yes" for the beginner training event other than the organizers. So we postponed and did our own things. For me that meant a bit of work around the house and more time with my son. And his first "real" backpacking trip. What a trooper! Awesome trip! Here are some photos.

For those "seasoned" backpackers who wonder why they should camp in a backyard--we have more than 3 acres of wilderness that should provide a safe survival exercise for you. Pretend your backpack just fell off a cliff! Your prize for ingenuity is dessert near the campfire (just be sure you can start it without matches). Come join us!!

Update your RSVP to "yes" by noon today in order to be sent directions to the venue.

I've loaded up extra gear for those who have let me know they need it. And then a bit more. We should be good to go! RSVP!

A suggestion for several who are on the fence. You can come out on Friday evening and leave. We're not going to tie you to a tree to make you stay the night. You will still have to RSVP "yes" by noon so I can send you directions.

Since you let me know what your situation is, it's OK. We now know how to plan for you. (And don't not come now, because bringing stuff for you means I can't ride over on my motorcycle. ;-) Please look over the New Backpacker Orientation document under the "Files" link on the left side-bar of our website for suggestions as to additional things you might bring. Certainly bring some food. For additional suggestions, go to the calendar and click on the link for last month's overnight trip

Hi, I'm planning on attending friday with a friend, but all we have are sleeping bags. Is that okay? Do we need to bring food and drinks for dinner or is the dessert enough. I'm looking forward to learning a great deal and getting started.

Who attended?

All the beginning backpackers, for whom this was being held, bailed (no RSVP's "yes" except organizers), so we postponed. Instead I took my 6yr-old son to Caesar's Creek for an overnight trip! He had fun. He carried our ground sheet, his sleeping bag and extra clothes and water. We stayed warm and dry. We got to see some incredible wild-life up close. I taught him how to use the digital camera, so he took some photos of his own composition. The trails were a bit sloppy, but we were only on them about a half-mile then we went off-road. My orienteering club has this park mapped, so I'm fairly familiar with the general lay-out. We ended up with a nice mosquito-free site on a spur of land that stuck out into the lake. We got to see beaver and hear and see it/them slap their tails. Geese came in for water-ski landings, set up a huge honking, then all took off again. Our camp was right at 1 mile from the car, by GPS, but the hikes in and out were probably twice that.
