http://doc.dartmouth....

I did it once years ago over a single week-end (Hands Across the Trail) . . . . We have enough hikers in our group to manage any sections in need of hikers between Springer and Hot Springs and maybe beyond . . .

I don't really get it. What's the point? Seems to defeat the purpose of backpacking to me and diminishes the accomplishments of people who actually do the entire trail.

ya, I understand the question . . . the project is about the trail itself, not the hike . . . remember that the AT is the longest, skinniest national "park" and it's maintained through volunteer efforts of some of the people who use it.

"The club will sponsor the first-ever single-day AT Hike". That sounds like it's about faking a 1 day hike of the entire AT to me. Not sure what you mean by longest park either. The PCT and CDT are both longer and maintained by people who use them as well.

I don't think it fakes a 1 day hike of the whole AT. It looks more like if they were trying to create a human chain along the trail - you know, with people holding hands.. I guess some people will find it exciting to be a part of a project that involves thousands of people along the trail that is 2000 miles long.. I would not be one those though :)

I'd also say that it is kind of a flash mob thing - when a big number of people get involved in the same (quite unusual) event and get some excitement out of it..
