Don't know how everyone feels about MRE's (Meals ready to eat) but I found a site that sells them for less than the military commissary. If I remember right they are heavy though.

Karen, I know very little about MRE's. Are they made to eat cold or hot or both?
I usually get my food from www.trailfoods.com. They sell Enertia foods which are dehydrated rather than freeze dried. You can store them for six months. They are really tasty. Wild Bill |

Light weight is key for backpacking, so I am not sure that going to be a great option. Military stuff tends to be quite heavy in general as I recall (including boots, etc).
I bought 3 packages of Mountain House MRE from REI sometime ago and it cost me 23 dollars. (it's $6.50 or even $7.50 each + tax). I'll give them a try, but honestly a pack of instant potatoes from Kroger is less than one third of the price per serving and I will see if Mountain House stuff is three times as tasty :) |

Hey Karen, one of my favorite sites to check out is : http://www.trailcooki...
Go to the recipes section and you'll get all kinds of ideas that you can just throw together at home. She also does the Freezer bag method which is really cool and efficient. I've used the potato soup recipe several times, real easy and cheap to put together. I love soups on the trail Look for how to videos there too. I saw a couple where they were making biscuits and cakes. Also, don't forget we had a recipes thread a while back. Here it is: http://backpackers.me... ----Polar Bear--- |
