Hopefuly fall will be at its finest this weekend.

We begin on the Slickrock Creek Trail, off of US129. Take the Ira Branch trail to the Stiff Knee then up the Fodder Stack and camp along the way.

Next day continue up the Fodder stack to the Bob Stratton Bald trail then camp on top of the bald.

Day three continue on the Bob Stratton Bald trail to Naked ground where we will pick up the Hoe Lead trail. In Saddie gap we will take the Hangover Lead South trail to the Big Fat then over to Slick Rock Creek trail where we will camp for the night.

The last day we will head down Slick Rock Creek trail, 10 creek crossings, to the parking lot. If the water is too high or it is too cold there is an alternate route that avoids the creek crossings.

Thru Oct 6th, I have four hikers signed up from various groups. Remember, it's possible to join us on the weekend and do part of the hike, if you'd like.

I am cross-posting this from the Nashville Backpackers Meetup Group. If any Atlanta hikers would like to join us, feel free to speak up and contact me. (Raymond)

These plans are tentative, so please feel free to speak up if you'd like to suggest a change. Also, because of all the road crossings, anyone could join (or leave) for part of the hike only, if they wanted or needed.

55 miles on the AT in central VA, from Roanoke to Glasgow, in three and a half days.

10/8 Thursday evening, drive to Roanoke/Daleville/Troutville, VA
10/9 Friday, hike 17 miles from Hwy 11 to Bobblets Gap Shelter
10/10 Sat, hike 13 miles to Bryant Ridge Shelter
10/11 Sun, hike 17 miles to Marble Springs campsite
10/12 Mon (Columbus Day), hike 8 miles to the James River and drive back home

I figure that it would be easier for someone to get off work Friday than Tuesday.

We would cross the Blue Ridge Parkway 12 times and go near at least one town during the hike, if someone needed to bail out (or wanted to join us late). I don't see any killer climbs on the profile map. I will arrange a shuttle with some local person, hopefully to shuttle our vehicle rather than us (unless we have two vehicles and do our own shuttling).

I have hiked about 700 miles on the AT in recent years and a recent past female thru-hiker has already asked to go with me on this hike. This is considered a STRENUOUS hike, though with proper conditioning, an old fat guy (me!) can do it. You will be required to bring your own equipment, food, etc., and carry it on your own back, just in case there's any question of that. And yes, you will "go" in the woods. LOL

I will check and if it is hunting season, you will need to wear some blaze orange.

MeetUp demands I put in RSVP limits on number and cut-off date, but those are very flexible as far as I am concerned.

Questions? Suggestions?

Will be camping Friday night at the old girl scout camp, base of the Deep Gap Trail. The parking lot is at the end of the FS road that goes through Tate City and dead ends in NC.

In the morning we will hike up the chimney Rock Trail to Case Knife Gap. Fill up on water at the spring, eat lunch then hoof it up the Standing Indian Connector Trail which is an extremely steep trail. At the top we will turn left and head SB on the AT to the top of Standing Indian where we will all meet up. The Standing Indian Connector trail is no longer blazed nor is it mentioned in any of the newer guide books that I know of.

Next day we will continue SB on the AT to Deep Gap where we will head down the Deep Gap Trail back to the parking lot. The Deep Gap trail is every bit as steep as the Standing Indian Connector Trail only you are going down hill.

Been wanting to do a overnighter on Blood all summer but never got around to it.

I will be starting from the Byron Herbert Reece Picnic area at 4:30. The turn off for the parking area is .4 miles north after you cross Neel's Gap, this is where the AT crosses US19/129.

I will hike up the Blood Mountain Spur trail (.7 miles) to the AT then head south to the top of Blood (1.5 miles). There are several sites for camping and if one wants they could sleep in the shelter. Never know how many people will be up there but if there aren't any spots left may have to continue south to the designated camping spots further on down the mountain. Hammocks would work better if all of the tent sites are gone.

Keep in mind that there is no water on the top and fires are not allowed.

The next day I will continue south on the AT to bird gap (about 2 miles) then hang a left on the Freedman Trail. The Freedman trail (2.9 miles) circles back around Blood and ends opposite where the spur trail ended. Then I will take the spur trail back to the parking lot.

I know it is short notice but if you would like to join me I will try and be in the parking lot at 4 pm. I drive an old silver Altima. I will have a black dog with me.
