OK, this is what I came up with: Saturday: Start at Three Forks Mtn parking lot in Cohutta -> East Cowpen Trail -> Rough Creek Trail -> Sugar Cove Branch -> Jacks River Trail -> Jacks River Falls (9.2 mile) (assuming that we can camp in that area) Sunday: Rice Camp Trail -> Hickory Creek Trail -> Panther Creek Trail -> Panther Creek Falls (11 miles) Monday: Panther Creek Trail -> East Cowpen Trail -> Three Forks Mtn parking lot (4 miles) Total: 24 miles Rating: easy to moderate, sometimes strenuous

I am thinking about a 4-5 day trip to the Smokies (May 22-25), unless someone has a better idea where to go ... This is what I came up with: Day 1 Newfound Gap - Mt. Leconte (8 miles) Day 2 ... - campsite 33 (16 miles) a lot of miles, but mostly downhill Day 3 ... - campsite 29 (13 miles) Day 4 ... Tricorner Nob (11 miles) Day 5 ... - Newfound Gap (10 miles) Looks like a challenging one, but this is the only way to do this loop in 5 days ...

The Estatoe Heritage Preserve is a beautiful, pristine wilderness area located in Pickens County, SC. This section is open to primitive camping on the Estatoe River. We will hike two miles to the campsite and should be set up by noon and leave out Sunday afternoon. This will allow plenty of time to relax, explore the river, swim in the large plunge pool and do some trout fishing. The Estatoe is one of the few streams in upstate SC that supports a good population of native trout. Distance: 4 miles out and back. Elevation gain: 1200' This is a joint venture with the Foothills Group.

Amy has agreed to lead us to her favorite place again for those of us who had to miss it the first time and maybe some who want to do it again. It's the Pocket Wilderness near Soddy Daisy Tenn and if you read the things people said about this hike the first time, then we're in for a treat! This time it'll be warm enough for some serious swimming and there's suppose to be an abundance of deep holes,so bring your swim suit. We'll start at the trail head near Mont Lake road and hike about 4-5 miles to Stephenson Branch Campground or campsite number one. This hike should be rated moderate to strenuous. I've talked to a few who did it and they say it's fun, but can be tough. I would not recommend this hike for people who never backpacked before. However, if you fit that shoe and really want to come, let us know. We'll meet at the cracker barrel in Kennesaw at about 7:30a-8am ,This is so we can meet at the trail head around 10am. Amy said we should try for an earlier start to make the campsite earlier because there maybe competition for the best sites. We can work out some carpooling from Atlanta. People have left their cars at The Cracker barrel without any problems on previous hikes. There's also a park and ride down the road, but I'm not sure what that's for ( I'll investigate) Thanks to Debbie H, she said one of her meetup groups uses this park and ride all the time without problems. that's cool because it's just down from the craker barrel. If you want to meet us at the trail head, here's the directions: Take 75 North into Tennessee to exit 4 (153N). Take 153N for 12 miles (over the dam). It will turn into Dayton Pike. Take this another 3.5 miles. You will go over a small bridge. Keep a lookout for a Sonic on your right. You will take a left on Montlake Road just before the Sonic (there is a bank on the left hand corner as well). You go about 1 mile, and you will see the big sign for the State Park area on the left (Upper Chickamauga Pocket Wilderness). This is the entrance and parking area. Here's a website to check out for more info: http://www.cumberlan d... and don't forget to check out the previous hike that everyone went on a few weeks ago to check out the pics and comments. Hope you can go!

As we don't have a lot of people this time (I wonder if there are any?), I decided to a closer place and explore the Foothills Trail, which is only 2 hours from Lawrenceville. It either going to be 10-12 miles in, and same out, or we can arrange a shuttle, and then it could be 8+8 miles. If Cindy goes with us for a day hike this could work really well.

The following link will give more details about the area we will be hiking in: http://www.sherpagui des.com/georgia/moun tains/blue_ridge/eas tern/tallulah_basin. html Saturday- Hike 7 miles on Beech Creek trail. The hike is mostly a long gradual up hill hike. We will be camping about a half mile up the Big Scaly trail. There are good views from nearby rock outcrops. Difficulty-Moderate. Sunday- Hike 7.5 miles back to trail head parking lot on Chimney Rocks Trail. The entire hike is down hill. Difficulty-Easy. There is plenty of water along the trail.

Trail head should be about 2 hours from rabbit town which is off of exit #24 on I-985. Going to follow the trail from Frozen Creek Access point to Foothills trail then hike to the river for lunch then hike back to trail head. For as much information I could find click on this link: http://www.ncparks.g ov/Visit/parks/gorg/ activities.php Directions from web site: From Atlanta, GA, reach the park from I-85, taking South Carolina exit 2 onto SC 11 and traveling north toward Walhalla, SC. Turn north on SC 130, which becomes NC 281 at the North Carolina state line. Continue north on NC 281. The Grassy Ridge Access (west side of the park) is approximately seven miles north of the state line on the right. To reach the Frozen Creek Access (east side of the park), turn east on NC 64 in Sapphire. Travel toward Brevard approximately eight miles and turn right on Frozen Creek Road. The east entrance is three miles on the right. I am not going that way. I am taking 441 up through Clayton then going toward Highlands on GA246 which will run into US 64. Continue East on US 64 and follow the tail end off the directions above.

A friend of mine taking a group to Chattooga river this weekend (Sat/Sun) (NC side of the trail). I have stuff to do Sat morning, but thought about joining him after that. I am planning to leave around 3 or 4, and get back Sunday afternoon. This is going to be an easy one (4 miles in, 4 miles out or so). I am taking my work with me, so it is more of a camping trip for me that actual backpacking. Cheers, Dmitry

Hello! I am posting this trip for Ann and her niece who are coming to Georgia from sunny Florida in the middle of April to do the Blood Mountain Loop (or could we recommend something better?). Ann is concerned about water sources on the trail, so any information will be appreciated. She would like other people to join them, which I think makes a lot of sense, even though for most of us getting in the woods from Tuesday till Thursday is hardly possible. This is what she has to say at this point: ******************** *************** Our general plan is to drive up Monday, April 14 (from south Florida, about 8-10 hours) and stay at a hostel or at the campground at Lake Winfield Scott, then start out early Tuesday, camp on the trail Tuesday and Wednesday nights, back to hostel or campground Thursday night then drive back Friday.
Like I mentioned, I'm a complete novice at backpacking and my niece is clueless about the woods. She's very athletic though, so I have faith in her endurance. (and I've given her homework assignments like IDing poison ivy, learning basic first aid and walking her neighborhood with 25 pounds in her pack). But I really want her to get the whole experience, which includes meeting new people. So I would love for others to join us. The more the merrier. It would be safer and a better experience for my niece.
Any more information you could offer is greatly appreciated.
Have a great weekend! Cheers,
Ann
