Been wanting to do a overnighter on Blood all summer but never got around to it.

I will be starting from the Byron Herbert Reece Picnic area at 4:30. The turn off for the parking area is .4 miles north after you cross Neel's Gap, this is where the AT crosses US19/129.

I will hike up the Blood Mountain Spur trail (.7 miles) to the AT then head south to the top of Blood (1.5 miles). There are several sites for camping and if one wants they could sleep in the shelter. Never know how many people will be up there but if there aren't any spots left may have to continue south to the designated camping spots further on down the mountain. Hammocks would work better if all of the tent sites are gone.

Keep in mind that there is no water on the top and fires are not allowed.

The next day I will continue south on the AT to bird gap (about 2 miles) then hang a left on the Freedman Trail. The Freedman trail (2.9 miles) circles back around Blood and ends opposite where the spur trail ended. Then I will take the spur trail back to the parking lot.

I know it is short notice but if you would like to join me I will try and be in the parking lot at 4 pm. I drive an old silver Altima. I will have a black dog with me.

We start at Elkmont Campground, Gatlinburg, Tennessee 37738 as planned, but will finish earlier (Monday morning).

Saturday: Little River Trail - Goshen Prong Trail to Campsite #23 (7 miles)
Sunday: Goshen Prong Trail - the AT - Miry Ridge Trail - campsite #26 (12 miles, first 4 of which are 2700' uphill, but the rest is flat or downhill)
Monday: Jakes Creek Trail - Elkmond Campground (6 miles)

On Monday, I need to make a phone call no later than 2 PM, so I assume we have to take off from Elkmond no later than 11AM-noon.

Cheers,

3 days, 22 miles, 55 river crossings, bugs and humidity - Should be fun!!! Remote Cohutta area hiking on Conasauga and Jacks River trails with steep climbs in between. Wear your river shoes...and bring hiking poles!
This is a Johnny Molloy Route from his new book. Start at Conasauga River Trail head east to Hickory Creek trail north to Rice Camp to Jacks River and west to end at Steel bridge. This is a short shuttle route.
Alternate route is Conasauga to Panther Creek to East Cowpen to Hickory Ridge to Jacks or stay on East Cowpen to Rice Camp too Jacks. This adds some mileage and at least one good hill for John and Jr. Not sure about campsites yet. I'm open to suggestions. The goal is to stay wet, maximize river crossings, embrace humidity, stay bug invested, catch fish and not get snake bitten or run into any bears...

This is what Phillip has to say about this trip:

For the past few years I've been going to the Cohutta Wilderness Area and hiking the Jack's River or the Conasauga River trails. I find the 40-odd river crossings are a great relief to the summer heat. I've been keeping a close eye on the upcoming trips, but haven't had any fit into my schedule yet. I tend to stay pretty busy, so I have to plan trips far in advance. I have a trip planned to go do the Conasauga River trail from August 7th-9th (Fri-Sun) and would love if we could make this trip into a group meetup. It's a 13-mile trail with 40-odd river crossings. Terrain's fairly easy, but the crossings will tire you out. Since the Conasauga lacks the falls of it's sister trail the Jack's, we shouldn't see many people; in fact, I've been a few times where I didn't see anyone all weekend. Thanks Dmitry, hope it can be a trip!

Robin and I were up in this area last weekend and found several excellent spots no more than 2-3 miles from the trail head with great swimming holes. We thought it would be a good spot for a beginner trip or a more leisurely trip for the experienced members. We already have an ideal spot in mind with a small beach and large swimming area as well as a huge site for shelters. If that site is taken we'll go a little further in but overall it shouldn't be more than 3 miles each day. We should get there around 10 or so by leaving at 8 and be at camp by noon so we'll have plenty of time to swim Saturday. We will also have swim time on Sunday before we break camp.

I just realized that I have to be in Washington, DC on July 20 (Monday) morning and figured that rather than messing with planes, shuttles, buses, etc it should be more fun to take off on Friday morning and spend Saturday and Sunday in Shenandoah National Park backpacking (still have to figure out what trails to take - will appreciate any suggestions!). On Monday I will be driving to Washington to submit some documents in Russian Embassy, which hopefully should not take more than a couple of hours (may be less, but unlikely more as they are open from 9 till 11:30 anyway). After that I was thinking about checking out the city as I have never been there, or may be just turning back right away to get back to Atlanta by Monday night (if we stay to see the city then I guess we are spending another night at Shenandoah!)

Sorry for missing the big gathering on Chattooga River trail, but I am sure I will see everyone on other trips sometime soon!

Cheers,
Dmitry

Surprise, surprise - all camping sites in the Mountain Sterilng area are booked (I shoud've know better, but my planning horizon is too short to deal with those 6 months in advance reservations anyway).

Luckily, Silers Bald shelter is available and we can trace Adam and Lou's steps for the trip that they enjoyed so much (or were they making it up to feel those who bailed out feel jealous? ;). Chris's warnings and Adam's report give me a good reason to take it easy on this trip, so we are going to do it in three days as we planned for the Mount Sterling trip (June 28-28, Fri-Sat-Sun).

Google maps give me 160 miles of driving (3 hour and 10 minutes) - not too bad I think.

Day 1: Clingmans Dome - Silers Bald shelter (4.5 miles). We have plenty of time to check out the Dome and may be to do a short day hike after we get to the shelter that day.

Day 2: Sliers Bald Shelter - Campsite 69 (8 miles) - the longest day of our trip, but it's all downhill

Day 3: Campsite 69 - Clingmans Dome (6 miles).

Johanna and her friend can catch up with us at campsite 69 Saturday night - knowing what a great shape she is in I have no doubts that she can make 12 miles a day downhill!

If Tatyana brings her SLR this time, I will bring my camcorder and we will document our trip really well!

Lou's comments on the temperature give us hope that we will escape the heat that struck Georgia early this summer!

Cheers,

Our June social meet up will be at the Buford REI Scratch and Dent sale! This is a GREAT way to gear up at a DEEP discounted price! For those who don't know, REI has a VERY liberal return policy, which means periodically they sale returned gear at deep deep discounted prices. I was once with with a buddy who bought a 300 dollar pack for 50 bucks! It had like a missing buckle or something which we easily fixed!

I'll probably be there a little after 9 to get us a place in line (yes there will be a line!) so if you want to come early and keep my company that's cool! I'll be wearing a bright orange t-shirt to stand out!

At noon we'll head across the parking lot to Ted's Montana Grill; the winner of the National Restaurant Association's Green Restaurant Revolution award for their dedication to the environment! Their bison burgers are awesome! They are also vegetarian and vegan friendly!
