Been wanting to do a overnighter on Blood all summer but never got around to it.

I will be starting from the Byron Herbert Reece Picnic area at 4:30. The turn off for the parking area is .4 miles north after you cross Neel's Gap, this is where the AT crosses US19/129.

I will hike up the Blood Mountain Spur trail (.7 miles) to the AT then head south to the top of Blood (1.5 miles). There are several sites for camping and if one wants they could sleep in the shelter. Never know how many people will be up there but if there aren't any spots left may have to continue south to the designated camping spots further on down the mountain. Hammocks would work better if all of the tent sites are gone.

Keep in mind that there is no water on the top and fires are not allowed.

The next day I will continue south on the AT to bird gap (about 2 miles) then hang a left on the Freedman Trail. The Freedman trail (2.9 miles) circles back around Blood and ends opposite where the spur trail ended. Then I will take the spur trail back to the parking lot.

I know it is short notice but if you would like to join me I will try and be in the parking lot at 4 pm. I drive an old silver Altima. I will have a black dog with me.

With the late notice I ended up by myself. Weather was very pleasant. Sat on top the mountain with 8 others watching the sunset. Just before sunset a older guy and his wife showed up with no water and no flash light and they still had to hike back to the parking lot. Lucky for them we gave them water and a flashlight. Didn't hear about a missing couple Sunday. Sunday AM heard what sounded like a herd of boy scouts but it turned out to be 30 or so soliders running down the MT with full backs.

Sorry about the late notice but it goes that way sometimes. Roofers fell behind because of the rain so I ended up with only an afternoon hike and I have been wanting to do this hike for some time.

    •  Turned out to be a very relaxing quite night. Very limited tent spots on the mountain but lots of hammock spots. If the club were to do this hike again keep in mind the limited tent spots. There is a shelter but because of the popularity of the area you cannot count on getting a spot there either.
