Hi guys!

OK, I am back and we are going to do a part of #6 section of the AT: Dicks Creek Gap - Bly Gap + 3 miles to Muskrat Shelter. I've been there a couple of years ago and the view near the shelter was terrific. You can check it out here:

http://www.flickr.com...

The trail is rated moderate to strenuous, water sources: mile 0 - rivulet, mile 1.6 - permanent branch to left, mile 4.3 - stream, mile 8.6 - spring, 8.8 - springs at Bly Gap, mile 12 - water near the Muskrat Shelter.

Google says its 96 miles (1 h 46 mins) from my place to Dicks Creek Gap.

Cheers,
Brer Mountain Rabbit

I uploaded the maps (2 maps for the route and one elevation profile). If anyone has ink in his/her printer that would be nice to get a print out for tomorrow! :)

Thanks John for the offer. It is much appreciated. I'm going to meet up with Tatyana in Decatur, however, but I'll see everyone there ;)

Anyone driving over from Atlanta for this? Wondering if I could hitch a ride. If not, I'll be driving my scooter over there ;)

So let me get this straight. Dicks Creek to Bly to Muskrat - 12 miles. Then we retrace back to the start. Is this correct?

I camped years ago on the cliffs there and remember those views. There's a shuttle possibility if anyone is frightened by the in/out mileage issue: with long days we can lay the shuttle Friday night - Sat morning (anyone out there want to assist?). Shorter mileage folks can make the cliffs from Deep Gap below Standing Indian in NC (~ 5 miles/ 10 mile round trip in/out of Deep Gap). Others can make the cliffs for a day hike from Deep . . . email me anyone who wants to lay shuttle

Normally 12 miles would be too short for me but I'm testing recovery of a knee problem and testing new gear so I'm ok with Bly or Muskrat.

Well... granted the days are longer, but my base weight form winter to summer isn't but like a pound or two. I guess I just don't like more than 8 miles, and don't really want to camp by myself- I get skeered... But if we ALL camp at Bly Gap- which would be awesome- I'd be more sure of going.

Grant, come one! Days are long now, summer equipment is light - it will be a piece of cake. Besides, you can stop at Bly Gap (9 miles) and we'll pick you up on our way back! :)

depends on situation here on the home front. It might be the first weekend my girlfriend and I have at the same time in the past month. Also... 12 miles?!?! that's a long ways even if we get started early. keep in mind average hiking speed is 1.7 MPH, which would be 7 hours... that's a lot of hiking...

This is going to be awesome. I haven't been on a camping/hiking trip in almost a year. Waaaaaay too long for me.

    •  We had a great time. The weather was outstanding, but it was still a challenging 12 mile hike each day.
    •  The most challenging physical feat ever for me but I feel quite empowered to have accomplished it :) Would love to come out again with this group and would do similar type of trail but only once I get my gear and shoes right. Enjoyed meeting everyone and greatly appreciate all the advice and experience other members shared.

I had a great time; I'm just sorry that I had to rush back sooooooooooooo soon (boy am I feeling it today). This group is awesome and they mean business. I love it and look forward to our next adventure!!!!
    •  It was an incredible workout and I learned a lot about backpacking from people who know the art well.
    •  I may not have said much because of the heavy breathing and being way too tired, but I had a lot of fun! Will definitely go backpacking again!
    •  Nice section of well maintained trail. Sadly, the famous gnarled Oak at Bly Gap is dying.
    •  Wonderful trip and wonderful folks! Check out my trip report and the pictures for this one!
