The last trip we did to the Pocket Wilderness, we saw some VERY unusual fireflys. The color was different, almost like an white LED light and they didn't blink or it just seem like they didn't. IT was super spooky! Even when you knew that they were Fireflys, they still looked like people walking through the woods with flash lights. They were definitely a different type then I'm used too. We were lucky to see them!

Were those the synchronous fireflies, like you see up in the Smokies? We saw them up there on Memorial Day Weekend when we were backpacking. It was amazing...they looked like hundreds of eyes peering out of the woods at us. Very spooky...

These didn't seem to blink either and looked like people walking in the woods with flash lights. I didn't realize there were so many different types of fireflys. What do you call them? Fireflys or lightning bugs? |

Letters Of Summers and Fireflies (1 Letter) Published: July 6, 2009 To the Editor: I couldn’t resist being fascinated by “Blink Twice if You Like Me” (June 30). What makes the piece so deeply seductive is not just Dr. Sara Lewis’s passion and perseverance in studying fireflies, but also how much the mating behavior of the world of fireflies mimics the human world in matters of love, sex and power. In fact, maybe we are imitating the fireflies. James Chan Philadelphia |

you can "talk" to fireflies/lightening bugs/whatever you call'm . . .
when I was a smoker, I used my cigarette to "talk" to them now I use my headlamp . . . the female bugs are astounded by the headlamp's party setting . . . sometimes . . . |

Wait a minute! You have a headlamp with a party setting? Is it the one with the built in strobe....or disco mirror ball? All my life I have dreamed of owning a headlamp with a party setting |

Hmmm....I guess I didn't really pay much attention to the color of the light, just the fact that, yes, they did look like people walking through the woods with flashlights, or animals' eyes. They were extremely bright and constantly on, not flashing like the fireflies in my backyard. In Canada we call them fireflies. I hadn't heard the term lightning bugs until I moved to the South. |

Yes, that sounds JUST like the one's we saw. Very Spooky! Even when you knew they were nothing more then Fireflys, they still put you in high alert status.
I was hoping some "Bug Person" would chime in and let us know alittle about these lighty uppity's. (that's what Tiger from Poo and friends calls them, and yes, I have a three year old and help her watch those programs) I was hoping I wouldn't have to google them and get all educated and all (: |
