What's Meetup?

Maybe it's time for a little less face-to-screen and a little more face-to-face.

What's a Meetup Group?

Meetup Groups are today's support groups, parent playgroups, citizen groups, fitness groups, book clubs, professional groups, and other powerful local groups!

About The Sacramento Backpackers Meetup Group

The purpose of this group is to meet other people in your town interested in backpacking. It is to talk about hiking locations, equipment, recipes, etc.. This group is to meant find people to take trips with and find out what types of trips others want to take. Trips can be over-night or multi-day.

If you are interested in a particular backpack trip that you would like to post on the site, please contact Rob or one of the assistant organizer to see if they would post it for you on the site. You would then be the event organizer for that particular trip. Each event organizer will need to get a wilderness permit (if one is needed) and determines how the trip will be organized. For example, the event organizer might want to have a pre-planning meeting. Ex. The event organizer determines how food, tents, cooking supplies, etc. are handled. The easiest way is to have everyone bring their own food and gear. The organizer figures out where to meet and if you want to do some way of carpooling, and determines the group size.

The following are suggestions on what to include in a trip destination.
What to include in an event:

  • Give a detailed description of the trip. Include the length, elevation changes, and rate the difficulty: Easy, Moderate, Hard, and Strenuous. Please tell about your pace: slow (2 miles an hour); moderate (2-3 miles an hour) or strenuous (3+ miles per hour.
  • If you got the info from a hike book state the book and page. If from the web provide a link.
  • Determine if you want to have a carpool meeting place or if you want to meet at the trail head. Give a detailed directions to either the trail head and/or the carpool location.
  • Include your name and how to contact you (can be via email or phone)
  • Include topo map information.
  • State if dogs are allowed, and if so, if they need to be on a leash.
  • Include what conditions might cause the event to be canceled.
  • Any special items that need to be brought.
  • How many people can come and if you want any "maybe's" to sign up or just yes and no.

    Carpool Locations

Try and pick a central location for your carpool location. Remember that people are coming from all over the greater Sacramento area (and maybe anywhere in the valley). Even better have one for each side of town and ask people to state where they will meet to carpool from. If you are planning multiple carpool locations and are going to go from one to the next allow a reasonable amount of time to get to each one and for loading up, etc.
Also rather than just saying meet at location at 9:00 AM state it more like: meet at 9:00 AM leaving at 9:15 sharp.
