SUMMARY:Hiking Whiteface and Esther in the Adirondacks and celebrating in M
 ontreal
DESCRIPTION:New York Backpackers Club\n\nThe Plan: We'll be hiking up Esth
er Mountain and Whiteface Mountain on Saturday. This is a 10 miles roundtri
p hike. It takes about 8 hours. We'll start at 8h00 on Saturday morning an
d try to finish by 4pm and 5pm. I am planning on leaving the city around
4pm. The drive up to Lake Placid is 8 hours. We'll be camping out on Frida
y night at Meadows Lane but if it is not plowed\, we will get a tent site a
t the Adirondack Loj down the road from Meadows Lane. After our hike\, w
e will drive to Montreal. It is a two hour drive so we should be in Montrea
l around 7pm. We will stay at a hotel in Montreal. The cost of the hotel in
Montreal per person for Saturday night should be around 30 to 40 dollars p
er person. I will book the hotel one week before the trip so I will be aski
ng for a payment of $40 two weeks before. If the hotel is cheaper than $40
then I will refund you the difference. This payment is non-refundable. If I
don't hear from you when I send the email asking for payment then I will c
hange your RSVP to No and you will join a very special list. When we get
to Montreal\, we will check in the hotel\, take a shower and go to get a go
od meal and hit a bar to celebrate our successful hike up Whiteface and Est
her. Equipment (Not optional): Ice Axe (Optional but recommended for your
own safety. Might save you life to have one if you start sliding down the
mountain) Crampons Snowshoes Winter hiking clothes Gloves Hat Mittens Winte
r Hiking Boots Tent (Optional\, we usually have enough tents) 0 F sleeping
bag. You can get a 15 but I can't guarantee it will keep you toasty. Headla
mp Map (optional but recommended) I would prefer if everyone owned their o
wn equipment\, however if someone is missing something\, we will not wait f
or the store to open at 8h30 in the morning to go rent the equipment. If yo
u're missing something on the list you have two options: Renting it in the
city\, you will have to call Tents & Trails and find out if they rent all
the equipment and get it before the trip. Option 2 is renting it from the
EMS in Lake Placid. It closes at 10pm in December on Fridays. This is a fo
ur hour drive so if you need to rent your equipment from them make sure you
get to Lake Placid by 9pm. Therefore all of you who don't have the equipme
nt should be leaving NY the latest by 2pm in order to get to Lake Placid wi
th enough time to rent your equipment from EMS. Again please call EMS yours
elves and find out if they have all the equipment before a week or two befo
re the trip. Documents: If US Citizen\, Passport or Enhanced Drivers Lic
ense issued by NY State. The Enhanced Driver's License is only issued by NY
\, MI\, VT and WA. Your driver's license should say Enhanced on it otherwis
e you have a regular driver's license and you can't cross the border. If
permanent resident\, you need to bring your green card to cross the border.
Others\, please check with the Canadian consulate to make sure you can cr
oss the border into Canada and return to US. If you have never been to Mo
ntreal\, this will be a blast. It is a gorgeous city and it is a lot of fun
anytime of the year. In your RSVP please let me know whether you're drivi
ng or need a ride. Also please post the time and place you would leaving fr
om on that Friday if you know or updated when you know closer to the date.
Again if you need to rent from EMS in Lake Placid make sure to leave NYC
by 2pm. Tents and trail might have some equipment but i'm highly doubtful.
Most certainly EMS will have everything but you will have to get there EARL
 Y. The store opens at 10am so if you don't have your equipment you're not h
iking with us because we will start at 8am regardless. Questions\, please
 email me at metope@gmail.com Thanks\, Francisco\n\nNew York\, NY 10036 -

SUMMARY:MLK Weekend New Hampshire trip
DESCRIPTION:New York Backpackers Club\n\nUpdate: We might have to rent a c
ar or two. If so\, a car rental is usually $50 a day from North White Plain
 s. Please factor this into possible costs of the trip in case we don't have
enough cars. If we do rent a car\, we would get a car big enough for four
people which would bring the cost of the rental to around $40 a pop. -----
 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------- Guys\, we are going this ye
ar again to NH for MLK weekend. We usually have a large group going up ther
 e. Half of the group usually goes XC skiing and the other half goes hiking.
This year we'll keep the same theme. Also if any of you wants to take a co
urse you're welcome to join too. I have booked the hostel in NH for that w
eekend for 30 people which is what we had last year between\, Chris' group
taking a course\, some people XC skiing and some people hiking up Mount Was
hington and some doing other hikes. My plan is to go hiking maybe one or t
wo of those days and perhaps a day of XC skiing. We will have a big meal on
Sunday that we will cook together. We are leaving Friday January 15 and c
oming back Monday January 18. The rooms in the hostel are $22 per night.
Here is how your RSVP: In your RSVP let me know if you're driving or nee
d a ride. Also VERY IMPORTANT if you RSVP Yes\, you WILL have to pay me wit
hin two weeks for the hostel. If you don't then I will remove your RSVP.
The total for the hostel plus the tip that I usually leave the lady plus Pa
yPal fees is 73.50. To pay me please send payment via PayPal to my email a
ddress: metope@gmail.com If you want to send me a check via snail mail pl
ease let me know so that I can email you my address. Refund\, I will give
refund up to December 1st. After that the money is not refundable unless yo
u can find someone to take your spot. To go hiking with us in the winter y
ou will need: Crampons Ice Axe Mountaineering Boots Synthetic Warm Layers
Headlamp Map of the White Mountains National Forest Snowshoes Depending on
the condition of the trail it could either snowshoes or crampons or both.
If you don't have crampons or snowshoes or Mountaineering Boots\, you can r
ent them from EMS in Conway for about $50 I believe. It is always better to
own your equipment though\, in the long run it is cheaper. Those of you wh
o don't have the equipment should start looking for offers on website and o
utdoor stores. They always have fall sales and after Christmas sales. If y
ou have any questions\, email me: metope@gmail.com\n\nConway\, NH 03818 -
