I planned on doing this trip earlier but couldn't go so now i'm planning it again. I want to drive up to NH and stay near the Franconia range probably in Lincoln, NH. There might be some snow up there by the time of the hike. The weather is unpredictable so be prepared for a winter trip. We will stay in one of the campsites up in the mountain on Saturday night. It should be fun. We will come down on Sunday night and drive back to NY.

Also I will need each and everyone of you have to have crampons handy. You can rent a pair at tents and trails if you don't have one buy one. They are great for late fall, winter and early spring hiking.

Please RSVP and post whether you are driving or need a ride.

Equipment list:

1) Balaclava a.k.a ski mask prevents frostbite

2) Ski goggles prevent sunburn from snow and helps if the winds is blowing the snow in your face. Also when it is really cold it prevents frostbite.

3) Crampons

4) Sleeping bag at least 15F, 0F is much better

5) Sleeping pad

6) Tent (optional, we will share to minimize wait and impact on campsite)

7) Portable camp stove such as Jetboil or Pocket Rocket, if you don't have one we can share but it is better to have your own. If you are borrowing please bring a can of fuel so that you don't drain someone else fuel at least.

8) We bring our own food and cook it in the stoves. You can always get camp food that you just hydrate with water.

9) Water filter or iodine pills.

10) Backpack! Obviously.

11) Waterproof boots and gaiters. Two pairs of socks is good. Hiking socks with good wicking. I usually wear a thin wicking sock and a thick wicking sock if it is too cold. If the weather is nice only one will do. Again we won't know the weather until the day off. Weather changes dramatically in the mountains.

12) Synthetic layers. A synthetic base layer for the top and synthetic long johns. Preferable either Patagonia Capilene 3 or Icebreaker baselayers. Those are the ones I know. They are made for winter. On top of that hiking pants and a fleece. On top of the fleece a windbreaker or winter mountaineering coat. I recommended having another set of clothing for the night in case your underlayers are too wet. Hypothermia can easily get you at this time of the year. Having dry clothes at night is great. Put your night dry clothes in a plastic or a waterproof pouch. Don't let those get wet even if it rains or snows on your backpack.

13) NO NO ABSOLUTELY NO COTTON!!! COTTON KILLS IN THE WINTER!

Hi All,
I am very excited to announce my first trip posting since Rainier. This hike/climb was suggested by one of our Members. It looks like a great trip and of course takes place in one of my favorite areas of the north east... NH. We will be carpooling up to NH on friday night and staying at the Conway Hostel ... Saturday morning we will rise bright and early ... have a home cooked breakfast at the hostel and then head to Franconia Notch. You will need the Appalachian Mountain Club, White Mountains, Franconia-Pemigewasset map for this trip. I have posted some information from a local website that has a little bit more information about the details. This trip is considered VERY DIFFICULT... this is a mountaineering trip not a backpacking trip. You will need the following gear:

MANDATORY GEAR:
Mountaineering Ice Axe
Mountaineering Boots
Crampons
Snow Shoes

This is a very tough trip and is not open to beginners. We will entail bush wacking.

The group size is limited to 12 people so if you RSVP you are saying you are FOR SURE going.

Look forward to the hike,

Chris Mayville

I have often looked over and speculated on what the climbing on Mt. Lincoln might be like. I went to find out. I was not disappointed.

How to get there
Take 93 North to Franconia Notch. Park at the trail head parking just after the Basin parking or at the Lafayette Camp Ground. Hike the Old Bridal Path till you are in line with the gully (see 1st photo). Bush wack down through thick spruce to the brook. Cross the brook and head up the right drainage. Follow this drainage till you hit the basin then take the right drainage to the summit. Follow the ridge trail right to Haystack Mt. and descend the Falling Waters trail. It's about 9 miles round trip.

When to go?
Early winter before the snow get too deep. The gullies are subject to avalanche danger, be careful.
How much climbing can I expect to actually get in?
About one pitch of WI3 ice. If you are looking for lots of ice, this is the wrong climb. This climb is about getting away from the crowds and climbing a mountain.

Is it worth it?
Absolutely! No trail, road traffic or other climbers. I felt like I was walking up some big drainage out west. Great views all day and you top out at 5000 ft. A great leg work out and a great adventure. This is a remote climb so act accordingly. Enjoy

Seward, Donaldson, Emmons and Seymour are part of the 46ers. I plan on doing 3 on October 25 and 1 on October 26.
IMPORTANT:

If you RSVP "Yes" to this trip, I need you to email me at:

metope@hotmail.com

I need to know the following information:

A. Do you have a backpack, sleeping bag and sleeping mat?

B. Are you driving there or need a ride?

C. Do you have tent? (Not require, optional, just need to count the tent space for those without a tent)

D. Contact information? Cellphone?

Anyone failing to do so will be removed from the RSVP list within two days.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We will carpool up to Lake Placid or Saranac Lake and camp on Friday night by the a road campsite. Then we will wake up bright and early and do these 3 peaks. There are no official trails up the peak so we might need to do some bushwhacking to find the trails but all is in good fun. We will leave our backpacks at one of four lean-to's and daypack it up to the 3 peaks. We will go back to the lean-to's and camp there. The next day we will hit one more peak, Seymour and then head out for lunch and NYC.

When you RSVP please post whether you need a ride or let me know if you are driving. This way people can find you to carpool if they need a ride.

This is a two day trip. The first day is a strenuous hike which should be about 14 miles. The altitude gain about 5,000 feet between the 3 mountains. We will move at a quick pace because in October sunset is around 6pm and it is nice to see the top of the peaks while the sun is up.

The second day hike is about 8-10 miles long and we wills start bring and early. So it will be about 24 miles long for two days.

A headlamp is a must. If you don't bring a headlamp you won't be able to hike. It is for your own safety.

The amended plan:

We will backpack it to one of the lean-to's about 3 miles in on Saturday morning. Dump our bags and take a daypack to hike Seward, Donaldson and Emmons.

We will stay in the lean-to on Saturday night and on Sunday morning daypack it up Seymour. I'm doing this because this 4 mountains are all right next to each other however the first 3 and the last one have no trail between so you have to hike the first 3 up and then try to hike the last one but we won't have enough light to do all four in one day so two days should be good. If we start at 7am on Sunday we can be at the peak at 10am and be down by noon. We can then grab lunch in Lake Placid or somewhere around there and go home.

Any questions or comment contact me.

Francisco

We will meet by the dog beach pond at 13h00. Please don't be late. We will then proceed to find a spot to play. I will be on my cellphone so if you think you might get lost try to make it there by 12h30 this way if anything happens with the train or you get lost you will have time to find us and we can start the game at 13h00. Dog beach for those of you who don't know where that is, is a little pond in Prospect Park near the 9th St entrance. The easiest way to access is by entering the park at Prospect Park West and 9th St and walking West for about 5 minutes until you hit a little pond with dogs swimming inside. If you look at a map of prospect park available here:

http://www.prospectpark.org/visit/interactive_map

You will see a little pond between West Dr and Center Dr. That is the dog beach pond. You can input this GPS coordinates in google maps to get a better idea of where are meeting:

40°39'44.65"N 73°58'19.45"W

You must write down my number otherwise you might have hard time finding me in the park. Again my number is 3476831242.

thanks,

Francisco
