Lookig for a summer vacation that will be specatuclar and wont make you broke. I gotta trip for you.

We will be beach camping for 9 days on the outer banks of North Carolina. You can come down and stay with us for as long or as short as you like. This trip (11 hours driving) is contingent on how many drivers and non-drivers we have...there really is no good mass transit to this place, so all event goers will need to hookup with a driver who is also going. Depending on how many drivers we have, some people who are not driving may or may not be able to go.

Some activities we will be doing are camping, swimming, surfing, wind surfing, kayaking. backpacking a few nights on the uninhabited Portsmouth Island, hanging out in Ocracoke the town etc. We will be staying part of the time in the National Park Service campground on Ocracoke which has toilets and cold showers and has campsites right of the beach. We will also be spend part of the backpacking on the island of portsmouth which has NO facilities and you must brng your own water.

For the National Partk Service campsite on Ocracoke, we will need to reserve a campsite. The cost is 23$ per night per site. Each site can have up to six persons. I have rented another site for myself and 5 others and I will not rent an additional site until I have phone call commitments from people who say they are definitely committed to coming and will pay me back. So if you dont give me your cell number when you sign up, I will remove you from the rsvp list.

These campsites are on a string of islands that reach as far as fifty miles out to sea. The outer banks stretch for about 200 miles and vary in width from a stones throw to a few miles. 130 miles of these barrier islands are under the jurisdiction of the national park service, and are a national park. 56 miles of these islands are uninhabited and are run by the park service.

These islands, inhabited and uninhabited, are unbelievably beautiful. The small villages they do have are separated by miles of open beach. You can wake up in the morning and take a 10 mile “stroll” down the beach if you like and see virtually no-one, and that's on the inhabited islands!

There are countless shore birds, dolphins fifty feet out to sea, giant manta rays jumping out of the waves, giant sea turtles coming out at night laying eggs, pelicans constantly combing the shoreline. At dusk, raptors come out from the fragile coastal woodlands to feed on the shore.

Starting early in the summer, the water is crystal clear and as warm as the Caribbean. It is also one of the premiere places on earth for learning to wind surf or kite board. Also great for surfing and kayaking and observing sea creatures in the many animal refuges along it's shorelines. You will also see sea the tracks of sea turtles from the night before where they crawled from the sea to lay their eggs.

During the night, the skies are unbelievable, there being no light to dim the stars. You will be utterly awe struck but the brightness of the milky way. Watching lighting storms 50 and 60 miles out at sea is also truly unforgettable. On some special nights the wave ocean foam turns blue with the bodies of phosphorescent sea creatures.

The park service runs a campground which has showers and bathrooms. These campsites are all a stones throw from the beach. The uninhabited Portsmouth island has a "camp anywhere on the beach" policy, no facilities and bring your own water.

The drive down is long, but not boring. The eastern shore of Virginia is way cool, especially when you cross the 24 mile bay tunnel-bridge over the Chesapeake Bay at the end. You can’t see the other side when you start. It is really bizarre. Then you drive still further south…

for some nights we will be staying on Ocracoke Island. It has a park service campground which costs $23night/site for 6 people. There is a fun party town on the island called “Ocracoke“ (only town on this 20 mile island in fact), which being the last town in the island chain, has that “end-of-the-road” atmosphere that province town and key west once had, but is also a lot more laid back. It is also situated just north of the first uninhabited island, called Portsmouth.

Here are two google satillite map links so you can see how remote this place is.

Guys, lets go and have a few drink at the Water Taxi Beach. This should be fun. The place is probably going to be crowded so jot down my number: 347-683-1242. This way you find me at the Beach and I can tell you where we are parked at.

It should be fun. The beach is easy to access.

Take the 7 train to Vernon Blvd - Jackson Ave station and walk on 50th ave in the direction of decreasing street numbers until you hit 2nd st. Make a left on 2nd St and walk about two to 3 blocks until you see the sign for the Water Taxi Beach. If you can't find it just call me. I have never been there so I assume there is a sign. The address on the website is Borden St and 2nd St. So look for Borden St and 2nd St and they entrance should be around there.

There is a ferry that leaves from 34th st but apparently starting July you can take from Water Taxi from Wall St, Williamburg or Dumbo also to get to the beach. Just check the website in July and see how that is updated.

We should be there until 10:30pm so come anytime between 7:30pm and 10:30pm

Here is a link to the Water Taxi Beach:

Breakneck Ridge is a tough trail that requires scrambling and some steep ascents. We will be hiking about 10-12 miles. Offers views of the Hudson River, Palisades Park some Catskills peaks and the Shawangunks. During season, wildflowers bloom nearby the trail. This is is perhaps the lower Hudson regions best hike.

If you are driving to Cold Spring, NY, take Route 9D north. In about two miles you will drive through an underpass. Park on the roadside just north of the underpass. If you need a ride I suggest carpooling since it is cheaper for both the passenger & the driver.

If you are taking the train from Grand Central Terminal, take the 8:47 train to Cold Spring. It should arrive at 9:59am. It is a whistle stop so let the conductor know you plan to get off. A round trip off-peak ticket will cost $22.50.

To see a suggested gear list, click the link below:
http://www.ahealthyme.com/topic/dayhikegear

Since this is summer and it is a strenuous trail, you need to bring 2 liters of water & 1 liter of Gatorade.

It is dangerous to wear sneakers, flip flops or sandals while hiking. It might be raining and some sections of the trail will be muddy and/or slippery. You will need to wear boots with good ankle support.

Please indicate in your RSVP whether you are driving or will you need a ride. Please don't RSVP if you are not sure yet whether you can come. If the RSVP list is full, then just email me and let me know that want to come.

First things first, this place is huge and it is hard to find people there. If you can't find which you probably won't, just call me, 347-683-1242. I'll tell you which table we're at. I will try to make a sign to make it easier to find us but can't guarantee that. So just write down my number.

This is an awesome outdoor beer garden. We'll be there from 7:30 until probably 10:30 maybe even later. Hopefully the weather. The place is real beer garden and all the tables are outdoors except for a small bar. Beer is really cheaps.

Please, bring your ID, they are very very strict about IDs at this place. They won't let anyone in without one. I have seen them turn down grandmas because they didn't carry their IDs. Ridiculous but those are the rules.

How to get there:

N,W trains to Astoria Blvd. Get off the station and walk north to 24th ave and then make a left. The beergarden is easy to find after that.

UPDATE:

We're camping out on Friday and Saturday night at Meadows Lane about a mile north of the Loj. You drive in the direction of the Loj on Adirondack Loj road and about a mile before the Loj on the left side, there is a road called Meadows Lane. Drive on this dirt road for about a mile and at the end there are some nice free spots to camp out there at the end of the road.

Some people are staying Saturday night at the Adirondack Loj. If you want to stay on Saturday night at the Loj please make a reservation by calling the Loj at 518-523-3441.

We're sharing tents. Please bring a tent if you have one and if you have space share it with someone who doesn't have a tent.

Checklist:

This is a 28 mile hike. You're responsible for bringing your own water, a map for the high peaks and water purification tablets. You will also need a headlamp. Thermal underwear. It will be long and hard.

I will only take people who have hiked before. No blue jeans hikers. No hikers with cotton. You MUST BE ABLE TO READ A TRAIL MAP. If you can't read a trail map you're not coming. Chances are you might get lost in the largest park in the lower 48th if you don't know how to read a trail map. I'm not responsible for you guys, you're responsible for yourselves. I just want you to join me in doing one of the most amazing hiking trips you will ever make.

I recommended hiking in pairs though with someone you know well. This way anything happens, there is someone there to help you in case anything happens. This way no one can complain that they got stuck with someone slow. Therefore pick a person you know can hike at your speed. I will take care of whomever I pair up with and so will you. They will be your responsibility and you theirs.

We will hit about 12 peaks in one day. We will start at 3am so that around our first peak we should see the sun rising. This hike will take anywhere between 12 hours to 18 hours.

This is the route we're following:

Johns Brook
Lower Wolfjaw
Upper Wolfjaw
Armstrong
Gothics
Saddleback
Basin
Haystack
Skylight
Colden (optional)
Cliff Mountain (optional)
Algonquin

If anyone feels adventurous and you feel you want to do a longer hike you can always hit Sawteeth for a 13th peak. But this is our basic route.

We will carpool up there on Friday morning. Go to sleep early and wake up at 2am so that we can be on the trail at 3am.

Please again RSVP only if you're an experienced hiker. If you don't own thermal underwear, hiking boots or know how to read a trail map and find your way out of the park then you're not an experienced hiker.

The 17 miles loop of Wittenberg, Cornell, Slide and Giant Ledge is in response to Francisco's 28-milers in the Adirondacks that is less then two weeks away. I'm training for the 28-milers and I feel that this will be a good practice hike to see how well I do. I highly suggest those who will be doing Francisco's hike of the Adirondacks to do this as a practice run with me. If one is having difficulty hitting 4 peaks, 17 miles in one day, then how will it be possible to marathon through 12 peaks, 28 miles in one day. Practice makes perfect!

This is a great 17 miles loop trail through some very difficult terrain over 3 - 3500 club peaks. Slide 4180' tallest in the Catskills(views of 33 of the 3500' peaks), Giant Ledge 3200', Wittenberg 3780' and Cornell 3860'. Please bring your own trail map.

Here is what you'll need to bring.
1). 3 liter of water and water tablets or water filter (in case you are a big drinker)
2). Waterproof shell (very important)
3). Fleece
4). Hiking sneakers/boots with very cozy hiking socks
5). Synthetic clothes
6). Food (breakfast, lunch, snacks)
7). daypack
8). Headlamp
9). First-aid kit
10). Catskills trail map
11). Trekking poles are optional (I was taught by a pro on how to use the trekking poles and it does wonders)

BE FORWARNED: I am not a professional and I do NOT take responsibility for your safety. The New York Backpackers is an AT YOUR OWN RISK organization. There is no fee for this trip and I am doing this as a favor for people who want to try this out with me. You are responsible for your own safety and make sure you have a map of the Catskills so you won't get lost in the park. I have no safety or first-aid training, and neither does anyone else on the trip. We will be outdoors, hiking and scrambling up several mountains, so if don't have the skills for this, then please don't participate. People can hurt themselves in a variety of ways. You also need to be in good physical condition and is able to bag 4 peaks and hike 17 miles in one day.

We'll have some good food and talk about past and future trips. Plus after dinner we'll hit one of the local dive bars, perhaps one with some good live music. This is Park Slope so we will have plenty of choices.

How to get to the V-Spot? 2 or 3 trains to Bergen St, M, R trains to Union St or for a slightly longer walk any train that goes to Atlantic - Pacific, that is B, D, N, R, Q, M, 2, 3, 4, 5 trains. It's a 10 minute walk from Atlantic-Pacific (we're a hiking group so 10 minute should be a prob.) Just walk south (uphill) on Flatbush from the Atlantic-Pacific station and then make a right on 5th Ave. Easy.

Hope to see you guys there. If the weather is nice to here a nice garden in the back and perhaps we can have dinner outdoors.

Afterwards we'll go for drink. If you're coming late and if you're wondering whether we're still eating or if we're having drinks just call me.

My number is 347-683-1242. Write it down anyway, in case you don't find us or if you're lost.
