Devil's Path in total is over 25 miles and is viewed by many as the best backpacking trip in the Catskills. It is a very, very, very strenuous trail summiting several peaks (Plattekill-3110 ft, Sugarloaf-3810 ft, Twin-3650 ft and Plateau-3840 ft.) with steep descents through dense forest and over sometimes rugged terrain. There are southerly views of Ashokan Reservoir and Overlook and Plattekill Mountains. You also get distant views of the Catskills high peaks.

Here's the plan: Leave the city after work Friday evening (around 4-5pm) and get to the Devil's Tombstone campground (around 7-8pm). We will be staying at a campground on Fri night & Sat night. Since we are car-camping, you will only need to carry a daypack with you while hiking. All of your camping gear can be left in your tent or one of the cars at the campground. On Friday night, we will shuttle cars to end of the devil's path. On Sat morning, we drive to the beginning to start hiking on Saturday morning around 9am. At the campground, there is drinking water faucets, a small bbq grill and bathrooms with running water. We should finish the trail by 4pm on Sunday evening, have dinner at a local diner and be back in the NYC Metro area around 9pm.

I will be reserving 2 campsites and 4 parking spots for our group (assuming a group of 10 people) and it cost $6 per night per person. So I will need a total payment of $12 dollars from everyone. You can either send me an electronic payment via Paypal or just show up at one of the meetup events I am attending before this trip and pay me there. My email address on Paypal is [masked]. Once I know who is coming then I can start the process of reserving extra campsite for people and arranging rides. If for some reasons you pay me, but need to cancel please email me asap. If I can find someone to take your spot, then I will issue you a refund.

It is absolutely important that you have all of the following gear:

Map of NY/NJ trail Conference 5-map Set of the Catskills Forest Preserve (costs about $15 plus tax)
http://www.ems.com/ca...
http://www.campmor.co...
(If you want to buy one from me, just add $17 to your Paypal payment for a total payment of $39.)

Daypack
Headlamp
sleeping bag
sleeping pad
2 liters of water & 2 liters of Gatorade (total of 4 liters)

plenty of food for 2 days
synthetic clothes (absolutely NO cotton or denim)
worn hiking boots with ankle support (new boots will give you blisters)
flip-flops or sandals to change into at base camp

bug repellent
sunscreen
watershell or rain jacket
toiletries (soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, etc.)
Toilet Paper or Baby Wipes

stove (your meals will taste better heated)
> it's ok if you don't have a stove, people will share ~
although it is nice to throw them a couple bucks toward buying
a new fuel canister

Tent (we can share if you don't have one)
Trekking Poles (optional)

Again, having these items are non-negotiable. It is dangerous to wear sneakers, flip flops or sandals while hiking. It might be raining and some sections of the trail will be muddy and/or slippery. You will need to wear boots with good ankle support.

Please indicate in your RSVP whether you are driving or will you need a ride. Please don't RSVP if you are not sure yet whether you can come. If the RSVP list is full, then just email me and let me know that want to come.

Jaymee, it will be too much trouble if everyone bring something to cook b/c it is hot & the food will be in the cars & not everyone has space for coolers w/ ice - Julie doesn't mind coordinating the BBQ and we will have plenty of food anyway. Jaymee you can bring extra veggies or veggie burgers if you want.

Oh, I also have a portable 4 pots camping stove. We can make pancakes for breakfast. Julie and Kevin, will it be better if each of us gets food, so Julie wouldn't be the only one preparing for the BBQ. I mean, I feel quilty for not contributing in the effort. What do you think fellas? Like, I'll bring the veggies, fruit juice and pancake mix. Julie can bring the marinated chicken. Two can bring the meat burgers, two can bring the veggie burgers...

Mike, I am planning to grill on Sat night only. I prefer to sleep early Friday night and get ready for Sat's hike.

Mike, I think 160 sq. in. of cooking area should be enough. TG, if you want have the marinated Chicken legs you have to come to our 2 days hike. Perhaps you can cancel your one day hike and join us on the following weekend. We will have a lot of fun. I got nightmare when I think about your One Day Devil's Path. Geez...

Hi Julie, I'm looking forward to it. The grill has 160 sq. in. of cooking area if that means anything to you. It should be enough.

Hey Mike, that's a great idea to bring a gas grill. How big is your gas grill? Do we need a 2nd grill?

I will bring marinated chicken legs (a special recipe from my grandmother's grandmother, the BBQed chicken legs are crispy outside and juicy inside. Ike can tell you how good they are), Italian sausages and/or some vegetables. Of cause, I will bring a bottle of my favorite wine as well.

Sure, Julie, if I feel well enough, I'll join for you for the BBQ. I can bring some food if needed, and then I'll drive back. That would also mean that I can help by evacuating anyone who is vomiting. ;) Debbie Downer? Cliched phrase much, Kevin? You can do better than that! Hey, I was just saying that I'd like to see Francisco try to take on this trail before he opens his big yap. That's all. Have fun and keep an eye out for porcupines!

A fun, long hike with noteworthy weather - even Sunday's drizzled, misty mountains offered a beautiful twist to the hike. Would love to go back and do the DP as a day-hike. It was nice to meet everyone. Thanks to Kevin and Julie for orchestrating and filling our bellies.
    •  Kevin organized a great trip and Julie did an amazing job with the BBQ. Thank you fellas. Now, my legs hurt.
    •  I had so much fun with these devils. Kevin is brilliant!!!
    •  Congrats to everyone on surviving the Devil's Path. We had great weather, nice views on Saturday & an awesome BBQ Saturday evening. Special thanks to Julie for amazing job she did coordinating the BBQ . Also special thanks to Mike for bringing his gas grill & circus tent. I thought this was one of my most fun trips ever and I hope to see everyone future trips.
    •  Great job Kevin! It was a fun hike above all else.
    •  Kevin organized a perfect trip! Julie prepared the most delicious camping BBQs and changed an otherwise austere camping site into a gourmet place. Thanks to everyone on this trip for being such wonderful hiking companions.
