Devil's Path in total is over 25 miles and is viewed by many as the best backpacking trip in the Catskills. It is a very, very, very strenuous trail summiting several peaks (Plattekill-3110 ft, Sugarloaf-3810 ft, Twin-3650 ft and Plateau-3840 ft.) with steep descents through dense forest and over sometimes rugged terrain. There are southerly views of Ashokan Reservoir and Overlook and Plattekill Mountains. You also get distant views of the Catskills high peaks.
Here's the plan: Leave the city after work Friday evening (around 4-5pm) and get to the Devil's Tombstone campground (around 7-8pm). We will be staying at a campground on Fri night & Sat night. Since we are car-camping, you will only need to carry a daypack with you while hiking. All of your camping gear can be left in your tent or one of the cars at the campground. On Friday night, we will shuttle cars to end of the devil's path. On Sat morning, we drive to the beginning to start hiking on Saturday morning around 9am. At the campground, there is drinking water faucets, a small bbq grill and bathrooms with running water. We should finish the trail by 4pm on Sunday evening, have dinner at a local diner and be back in the NYC Metro area around 9pm.
I will be reserving 2 campsites and 4 parking spots for our group (assuming a group of 10 people) and it cost $6 per night per person. So I will need a total payment of $12 dollars from everyone. You can either send me an electronic payment via Paypal or just show up at one of the meetup events I am attending before this trip and pay me there. My email address on Paypal is [masked]. Once I know who is coming then I can start the process of reserving extra campsite for people and arranging rides. If for some reasons you pay me, but need to cancel please email me asap. If I can find someone to take your spot, then I will issue you a refund.

It is absolutely important that you have all of the following gear:
Map of NY/NJ trail Conference 5-map Set of the Catskills Forest Preserve (costs about $15 plus tax)
http://www.ems.com/ca...
http://www.campmor.co...
(If you want to buy one from me, just add $17 to your Paypal payment for a total payment of $39.)
Daypack
Headlamp
sleeping bag
sleeping pad
2 liters of water & 2 liters of Gatorade (total of 4 liters)
plenty of food for 2 days
synthetic clothes (absolutely NO cotton or denim)
worn hiking boots with ankle support (new boots will give you blisters)
flip-flops or sandals to change into at base camp
bug repellent
sunscreen
watershell or rain jacket
toiletries (soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, etc.)
Toilet Paper or Baby Wipes
stove (your meals will taste better heated)
> it's ok if you don't have a stove, people will share ~
although it is nice to throw them a couple bucks toward buying
a new fuel canister
Tent (we can share if you don't have one)
Trekking Poles (optional)
Again, having these items are non-negotiable. It is dangerous to wear sneakers, flip flops or sandals while hiking. It might be raining and some sections of the trail will be muddy and/or slippery. You will need to wear boots with good ankle support.
Please indicate in your RSVP whether you are driving or will you need a ride. Please don't RSVP if you are not sure yet whether you can come. If the RSVP list is full, then just email me and let me know that want to come.

BE FOREWARNED: I am not a professional and I do NOT take responsibility for your safety. The New York Backpackers is an AT YOUR OWN RISK organization. There is no fee for this trip. I am an experienced backpacker who has hiked parts of this trail before, but I will be relying on my map & compass. I have no safety or first-aid training, and neither does anyone else on the trip. There is nothing particularly dangerous about this trip, but we will be outdoors. People can hurt themselves in a variety of ways. You also need to be in decent physical condition and to be able to carry your own pack for the entire trip.
