Buckskin Gulch in AZ

I am planning a 4 day hike to the Buckskin Gulch in AZ. This is THE slot canyon by which other slot canyons are judged. It’s on the list of backpacker magazine’s top 10 most beautiful hikes in the US.

The plan is to fly into Las Vegas on Tuesday, June 2nd, rent a car and drive out to the trailhead (5 hours) to spend the night. We’ll drop off the car at our destination and take a shuttle back to the trailhead. We’ll hike back to our car over the next 3.5 days. We’ll pass through the Gulch on day 1, then follow the bed of Paria river canyon for the next 2.5 days. On Satruday at noon we’ll drive back to Vegas. At this point you can either fly home or spend Saturday night partying in Vegas, up to you.

This hike will take us over 38 miles of beautiful slot canyone terrain – sometimes as narrow as 4 ft wide! The canyon is prone to flash flooding, so bad weather can put a cramp in our plans. June has some of the lowest percipitation rates and moderate temperature (inside the canyon), so our chances are best then.

This trip requires a permit ahead of time ($20 pp), I will arrange for 4 permits. The flight is approximately $300, car rental is $75 / person if we split one car + $40 pp cost of shuttle, + cost of hostel if we stay in one. Most likely we’ll end up camping in a tent by the trailhead on day 1 to save time.

My coworker and I are going, and are looking for 2 more people with some experience under their belt. We want to move fast and check out many of the natural wonders along the way, such as the largest natural arch in US.
