If you're new to the group, start with a day hike before trying a multi-day backpacking outing. I'm glad I did it that way. The multi-day trips are much tougher. Be sure you are properly equipped and DON'T EVER FORGET YOUR FLASHLIGHT. If you have the stamina and experience, it's great fun! The group has great people, too. I always meet someone fascinating. Just remember that winter AND spring outings can involve hiking on ice and slippery snow, which persists on the trails later into the year than you might think. Bring CRAMPONS for ice and snow for all such occasions. We didn't think we'd need them for a March 30-April 1 trip, but they would've helped tremendously. And gaiters would've made our April 27-29 trip much more successful. Still, even the problematic trips are great fun.

Love the fact that there are no "type A" personalities in the group. We spend all week on schedules and doing things "by the book." It's great to have a plan but even better that we can all be flexible and not have to stick to it.

I enjoy the socialization desires of the group, but getting home for me was a priority. Also I do not enjoy "speed hiking", i prefer to take in my surroundings and take my time. Overall it was a good experience.

Shack is a great organizer. I am new to the rafting event and he responded my tons of questions and taught me a lot about wilderness. The more you learn about it, the more you enjoy and appreciate the beauty of nature.

  • New York Backpackers Club

Full of fun, adventurous, go-w/-the-flow people who love the outdoors-- I've always had a great time! Do beware however that events can be quite loosely organized, & most leaders here assume self-sufficiency & experience in the participants. So you'd better be able to take care of yourself on any hike or trip that you sign up for. Then enjoy the unexpected!

    jooy on Sep 13, 2009.

  • New York Backpackers Club

As long as Francisco is leading trips, you should NOT join this group. I have hiked with many great hiking leaders and he exemplified many of the behaviors I had been warned about by all of them: inability to organize, incompetent planning and research (which is dangerous), arrogance and insensitivity to other hikers' abilities, and so on. If it hadn't been for the skills and talents of the other hikers, this trip would have been a total disaster.

  •  Do not like it when EMS sales events are announced as a meetup events. Otherwise, its a fine group that attracts many hardcore backpacker.

  •  I got the impression that Francisco was not interested in getting acquianted with new people. Still, I salute him for diversity of events he is offering.

    Eugene on Dec 1, 2007.

  •  the individual meetups have been terrific. the party wasn't at all cohesive. it'd be better to just have a big party in one place and not break into tiny groups. that didn't work.

    —A former member on Oct 1, 2007.

  •  there were a couple guys on the periphery who were welcoming, but otherwise, there was the "inner circle" and not one even acknowledged nor welcomed a new guy. i've been to another backpacker meetup at an eatery in queens and the people were fantastic and universally welcoming, so i judge not the group of, what is it, 1200 members by those at this place on this particular nite at this particular time. but, someone else lesser open-minded may, understandably, be a bit underwhelmed should s/he have been there at this place/time.

  •  I'm very happy to see this club so active and vibrant. Excellent Job Joe! It wasn't too long ago when I was at your place telling you about Meetup.com! I'm happy that your club has grown into what it is today, the largest Backpacking Club on Meetup.com! As per my previous discussions with you, there are still several things from a Logistic & Safety standpoint which I think you need to work on. Remember the "7 Pee's"?.Although you rarely join in on the activities that your group offers, I hope you are thinking about Safety Action Plans and Logistics, such as our mentors at Northland taught us,as both trips I've gone on with the club were lacking in this vital component. Needless to say, I have Greatly Enjoyed meeting & hiking with everyone I've met through your dynamic & thriving club. There is always room for improvement in anything we do,so please take this as constructive feedback, which it is.What is the legality of the group? What if someone got hurt & decided to sue?Are u protected?

Michael Kim 'Jamal' Riegelman on Dec 3, 2007.

  •  I think this was the height of discourtesy and poor planning. I do not know enough about the group to have an opinion but if this is an indication of the way they plan,I don't think I want to belong !
